Ex MoS raises concern over poor condition of Tripura’s national highways, seeks speedy repairs

Date:

Agartala, 28th July 2026 :   Amid growing public concern over the deteriorating condition of several national highways in Tripura, former Union Minister and BJP leader Pratima Bhowmik held a meeting with officials of the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) and highlighted the urgent need for improvement of key road stretches.

During the meeting, Bhowmik raised issues concerning the Agartala-Khowai-Kamalpur alternative National Highway and the Agartala–Assam National Highway stretch from Champaknagar to Khayerpur.

She informed that the Agartala-Khowai-Kamalpur alternative National Highway has a total length of 137 km, of which around 32 km is currently in a very poor condition. The construction work on the road began in 2020, but the contract of the agency engaged for the project was cancelled after two years due to unsatisfactory performance. Later, another agency was assigned the work, but progress has been affected as a survey report is still awaited, she said.

Bhowmik said she held detailed discussions with NHIDCL officials regarding the matter. The officials assured her that necessary steps are being taken to ensure smooth vehicular movement at Subalsingh area of the Khowai-Agartala road. They also set a target to complete the construction work of the road within the next one year.

She further stated that the poor condition of the Champaknagar-Khayerpur stretch of the Assam-Agartala National Highway was also brought to the notice of NHIDCL authorities. She urged the officials to undertake immediate repair works to maintain normal traffic movement on the route.
