Tripura Musician Receives Indian Patent for Innovative ‘Tripureswari Veena’

Date:

Agartala, 28th  July 2026 : Tripura has added another feather to its cultural cap as renowned Indian classical musician Dr. Jayanta Sarkar has been granted an Indian patent by the Government of India for his innovative string instrument, the ‘Tripureswari Veena’. The achievement is being hailed as a significant milestone for the state’s music, culture and creative innovation.

Inspired by Maa Tripureswari (Tripura Sundari), the Tripureswari Veena represents a unique blend of Indian classical music, Tripura’s folk heritage, traditional craftsmanship, science and spirituality. The instrument aims to showcase the state’s rich cultural legacy to music enthusiasts across India and around the world.

Speaking about his invention, Dr. Sarkar said that while preserving the essential characteristics of the traditional veena, the instrument incorporates elements of Tripura’s folk culture and indigenous craftsmanship. It has also been designed using scientific principles such as vibration, resonance, acoustics, harmonics and wave motion, enabling it to produce a distinctive tonal quality suited for Indian classical ragas.

One of the key features of the Tripureswari Veena is its sympathetic strings, which resonate automatically with the main notes to create a richer, deeper and longer-lasting sound.

The instrument also integrates several modern technological features, including an adjustable bridge, fine-tuning pegs, lightweight wood-composite construction, a piezo-electric pickup for stage performances and digital tuning support. Despite these innovations, its traditional aesthetics and authentic classical sound have been carefully preserved.

Dr. Sarkar’s achievement is being viewed not only as a personal milestone but also as a major recognition of Tripura’s cultural heritage, research and spirit of innovation. The patent is expected to further strengthen the state’s contribution to India’s rich tradition of classical music while promoting Tripura’s unique artistic identity on a wider platform.
