Outrage over power services at Kailashahar; Consumer body submits 15-point charter to TSECL

Date:

Agartala, 28th  July 2026 : Mounting public dissatisfaction over electricity services in Kailashahar came to the fore on Tuesday as the Electricity Consumers and Employees Welfare Association submitted a 15-point memorandum to the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL), demanding immediate reforms in the power sector.

A nine-member delegation of the association submitted the memorandum to the Deputy General Manager of TSECL at Gournagar around noon. The delegation included Baishampayan Chakraborty, Sirajul Islam, Pranay Kanti Sen, Anwar Hossain, Piyali Chakraborty and other representatives. Later, the organization addressed a press conference at the Kailashahar Press Club, outlining the issues behind their protest.

Speaking to the media, senior association member Baishampayan Chakraborty alleged that the increasing role of private players in the power sector and recent policy decisions have placed an excessive financial burden on consumers. He claimed that electricity bills have risen sharply due to higher duty charges, fuel charges and fixed charges under the revised tariff structure.

Among the key demands placed before TSECL are the withdrawal of the new electricity tariff, an end to privatization and the franchise system in the power sector, cancellation of the smart meter installation programme, restoration of old digital meters, recruitment of adequate manpower, regularization of contractual and outsourced employees, filling of vacant posts and immediate implementation of service rules for employees.

The memorandum also highlighted the deteriorating power situation in the Kailashahar subdivision, alleging that even light rain or moderate winds often trigger prolonged power outages. The association said the frequent disruptions are adversely affecting businesses, educational institutions, government and private offices, as well as the daily lives of residents.

The organization further demanded the speedy completion of the long-pending underground power cable project within the Kailashahar Municipal Council area, urgent renovation and modernization of the 33 KV transmission line from Mission Tila in Dharmanagar to Kailashahar, and an overall upgrade of the power distribution network. It also urged the authorities to terminate the contract of the existing service provider, claiming widespread consumer dissatisfaction, and restore direct management of services by TSECL.

Following the deputation, the association expressed hope that the Power Department and the state government would take serious note of the grievances and initiate corrective measures. The leaders maintained that addressing the demands would not only improve the quality and reliability of electricity supply but also make power services more transparent and consumer-friendly.
