Agartala, 12th February 2025: A former senior government official has been arrested in connection with an alleged breach of trust involving a Noida-based educational institution.
Tripura Police sources Kaizar Debbarma, who served as the Additional Director in Tripura’s Industries & Commerce Department, was detained at his residence in Agartala on Tuesday night.
Police said that Debbarma is one of six individuals accused of defrauding World Education Mission, a Noida-based institution, by presenting forged documents to facilitate the sale of 48.52 acres of land in Bodhjungnagar, West Tripura.
The incident came to light after Himangshu Panchal, the director of the educational institution, filed an FIR in July 2023. Panchal claimed he had paid Rs 1.25 crore to Kaizar and his associates for the land, only to later discover that the documents were counterfeit.
Following the FIR, five of the accused were arrested earlier in the investigation. Kaizar Debbarma was arrested on Tuesday night and brought before a local court on Wednesday. The police have requested a seven-day remand for further questioning.
Investigations revealed that the Rs 1.25 crore payment was transferred to the accounts of the five co-accused, but no trace of the funds was found in Kaizar’s accounts. However, police suspect his active involvement in the scheme as he had met the director of the institution and introduced him to the other accused.
Kaizar, who retired as the Additional Director of the Industries & Commerce Department a year ago, had been a prominent figure within the state government.
