Agartala, 26th October 2023: A case of medical negligence has come to light at the GB Hospital, the main referral hospital of Tripura, where a critically injured woman was allegedly given expired blood by the hospital staff. The incident has sparked outrage among the patient’s family and raised questions about the quality of health care at the hospital.
According to sources, Shilpi Bhowmik, a resident of Nalchar area, was admitted to GB Hospital after she met with an accident. The doctors advised her family to arrange for blood transfusion as she had lost a lot of blood. The family arranged a donor at the GB Blood Bank and collected a unit of blood as per their requirement. They handed over the blood to the hospital staff, who started transfusing it to the patient.
However, one of the family members noticed that the blood had expired and alerted the nurse. The nurse immediately stopped the transfusion and took away the blood bag. The family then rushed to the GB Blood Bank to confront them, but they denied any responsibility and claimed that they did not supply expired blood.
The family members narrated the whole incident to the media and demanded action against the hospital authorities. They also accused the hospital of putting their lives at risk by providing substandard services.
This is not the first time that GB Hospital has been in the news for negligence and mismanagement. Several allegations have been made against the health workers and doctors of the hospital, but no action has been taken by the hospital officials or the health department. The hospital is also facing a shortage of senior doctors and staff, who are allegedly busy in their private practice and neglect their duties at the hospital. Many patients have complained of harassment, lack of facilities and poor treatment at the hospital. Some have even opted to go to other states for better health care. The trust and confidence of the people in GB Hospital has been eroded by such incidents
