Farmers Demonstrate Over Rising Water Levels in Rudrasagar

Date:

Agartala, 28th April 2026:  Farmers in the Melaghar region are grappling with a worsening situation as the water level in Rudrasagar continues to climb continuous rainfall over the past two days, further aggravated by a temporary embankment. Vast areas of nearby farmland now face the threat of flooding, putting standing crops at serious risk.

Local cultivators estimate that around 2,000 to 2,500 farmers could suffer heavy losses if the water is not drained soon. They claim that despite informing the authorities multiple times, no timely action was taken to address the issue.

Frustrated by the lack of response, the farmers organized a road blockade on Monday near Bottoli Switch Gate along the Sonamura–Agartala Road. The protest continued for nearly two hours, disrupting traffic and causing inconvenience to daily commuters.

Responding to the situation, Officer-in-Charge Tapas Das from Sonamura Police Station arrived at the site and held discussions with the protesters. He assured them that immediate steps would be taken to resolve the problem. Soon after, a dredger was brought in to dismantle the temporary embankment, enabling excess water to flow out.

Following the intervention and assurances from the administration, the protesting farmers called off the blockade.
