Farmers in Barjala live in fear amid alleged land mafia activities

Agartala, 17th November 2026:   Farmers in the Barjala’s Bairagi Tilla area are living in constant fear as alleged land mafia activities threaten their livelihoods. Local residents have accused a man named Amit Debnath of illegally filling fertile agricultural plots and attempting to convert them into residential land.

Farmers informed that the land in question has sustained their families for generations. With large portions now facing destruction, many households are plunged into deep uncertainty.

Locals allege that the systematic filling of farmland for housing projects not only jeopardizes agriculture but also poses a serious risk to the ecological balance of the region.

Residents claim the illegal activity has flourished due to administrative silence. Expressing her anger to the media, Shibani Acharyya, the wife of a local farmer, warned that if the farmland is not protected, their families’ survival will be at stake.

“We have cultivated this land for years to sustain our household. If it is turned into residential plots, we will have no means to survive,” she said, urging authorities to act swiftly.

Shibani appealed to the DCM, DM, and the state’s Agriculture Minister to intervene immediately and take strict action against those responsible.
