Fidel Castro’s legacy inspires fight for exploitation-free society: Manik Sarkar

Date:

Agartala, 21st   August 2026 :  A solidarity meeting commemorating the birth centenary of Cuban revolutionary leader Fidel Castro was organised at Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhavan in Agartala, with former Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar recalling Castro’s revolutionary struggle and calling for a renewed fight against imperialism, capitalism and exploitation.

Addressing the gathering, Sarkar said Castro emerged as a revolutionary leader amid widespread public anger in Cuba over US interference, foreign exploitation and the oppressive Batista regime. He recalled Castro’s decision to defend himself during his trial following his arrest, saying his historic courtroom address reflected both his determination and his vision for Cuba’s future.

Sarkar traced the subsequent stages of the Cuban Revolution, including Castro’s exile in Mexico and the rebuilding of the revolutionary movement with Raúl Castro, Che Guevara and other comrades. He recalled their return to Cuba aboard the Granma and the guerrilla struggle they launched from the mountainous regions after suffering heavy losses at the hands of Batista’s forces.

The movement gradually gained momentum, while opposition to Batista also grew within sections of the Cuban establishment. Batista eventually fled the country, paving the way for a revolutionary government headed by Castro.

Sarkar said Castro’s government introduced land reforms, transferred land to the landless and sought to reduce foreign capital’s control over Cuba’s economy and natural resources. He also stressed Castro’s opposition to social divisions based on religion, race and community.

According to Sarkar, Castro’s influence went beyond Cuba, as he became a prominent international voice against imperialism, war and exploitation and in favour of peace and national sovereignty.

Sarkar said the centenary should be viewed not simply as a commemoration but as an opportunity to reflect on Castro’s ideals and the lessons of the Cuban Revolution. He called for greater unity among farmers, workers and the broader working population to strengthen the struggle for an exploitation-free society.

He further urged people across India to intensify the fight against imperialism, capitalism and divisive politics based on religion, caste and community. Expressing solidarity with the Cuban people and Cuba’s Ambassador to India, Sarkar said Fidel Castro’s revolutionary vision continues to inspire movements for equality and social justice across the world.
