Firefighters’ books thief amid alleged police negligence at Santirbazar

Agartala, 4th May 2025:  Firefighters from the Santirbazar Fire department booked a thief attempting to rob a shop near the Santirbazar police station. The suspect was handed over to the police following the intervention.

Firefighters in Santirbazar are primarily responsible for fire emergencies and rescue operations, ensuring timely medical assistance to victims. However, on this occasion, they found themselves stepping in to handle a security matter typically overseen by law enforcement.

Local residents have raised concerns over the effectiveness of police vigilance at night, alleging officers were asleep when the incident occurred. It has been claimed that officers, after spending long hours investigating minor infractions such as helmet violations, struggle to maintain overnight patrols. This lapse has reportedly enabled opportunistic thieves to target businesses under the cover of darkness.

Officials from the fire department informed the media about the incident, highlighting their role in preventing further losses. Meanwhile, residents have called for greater accountability and improved nighttime security in Santirbazar.

Authorities have yet to issue an official response regarding the allegations of police negligence.
