Agartala, 24th August 2026 : Alleging that the growth of fish farming in Tripura has slowed significantly in recent years, fishers’ union leader Sudhan Das on Monday called for stronger government intervention to protect the livelihood and interests of the state’s fishing community.
Speaking at a conference of the union, Das accused the BJP-led government of failing to adequately address the problems faced by fishers and claimed that the progress achieved in the sector during the Left Front regime was now being reversed.
Das said that during the Left Front’s tenure, 142 fishers’ cooperative societies were formed, with water bodies handed over to fishers and financial assistance provided to support their livelihoods. He alleged that fishers are now facing a difficult situation and urged the government to adopt effective measures to increase fish production while ensuring the economic and social security of the community.
The conference placed several demands before the government, including the modernisation of all fish markets in the state to ensure better hygiene and facilities. The union also demanded that government and semi-government water bodies be handed over to fishers’ cooperative societies or genuine fishers for proper utilisation.
Another major demand was the introduction of a monthly allowance of ₹5,000 for all eligible fishers. The union also sought increased government assistance to strengthen the livelihoods of members of the fishing community.
Das further demanded the immediate removal of the Fisheries Minister from the Cabinet, alleging corruption and accusing the government of failing to adequately safeguard the interests of fishers.
The conference urged the government to take immediate and effective steps to resolve the longstanding problems confronting the fishing community and revive the state’s fish production sector.
