Agartala, 13th September 2024: Heavy rains since August 19 have led to severe waterlogging across Udaipur sub-division and the entire state, forcing many residents to seek alternative shelters. Among the affected is Samaresh Bardhan (47) from Jamjuri area, whose house was inundated with floodwaters.
On a fateful day, Samaresh Bardhan, along with his brother, nephew, and some cattle attempted to navigate through the flooded streets to reach Jamjuri market. The water levels made it extremely difficult to wade through, and tragically, they were swept away by the strong currents. While Samaresh’s younger brother managed to cross, his nephew struggled and was submerged.
Eyewitnesses raised an alarm, prompting local residents and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) to launch a rescue operation. Although the nephew was saved, Samaresh Bardhan remained missing. The search continued relentlessly.
At around 5 AM on Friday, locals found a body in Tapan Bardhan’s pond. The family identified the deceased as Samaresh Bardhan by his clothing. The body had begun to decompose and was sent to Gomati District Hospital for an autopsy. The authorities have assured that the body will be handed over to the family post-mortem.
The tragic recovery of Samaresh Vardhan’s body has cast a pall of sorrow over the community. Residents and officials alike are mourning the loss, highlighting the devastating impact of the floods.
