Agartala, 13th July 2026: South Tripura District Magistrate Md. Sajjad P has assured residents that extensive flood-preparedness measures are underway across the district, with major embankment construction in Belonia nearing completion.
Speaking to the media, Sajjad highlighted that two days ago the Hon’ble Chief Minister chaired a detailed meeting with all District Magistrates, lasting nearly three hours, where each DM received 30–40 directives on flood preparedness. One of the key instructions was to personally inspect embankment works to ensure quality and public safety.
“In Belonia, nearly 15 km of new embankment is being constructed, and about 80% of the work is already complete. The remaining portion will be finished before the upcoming festival season,” Sajjad said. He acknowledged minor depressions in certain stretches, attributing them to time constraints before the rains. “We had to rush soil-laying without the usual three-to-four-month drying gap before brick soiling. That’s why some areas developed depressions. The Water Resources Department has assured that after the rains, these sections will be reworked with double-layer brick soiling.”
The DM further noted that proposals have been sent for additional retaining walls and for a small road along the embankment to address public concerns about accessibility. “In another two to three months, the area will be more secure and convenient. The Chief Minister is regularly monitoring the progress, so there is no need for worry,” he added.
The embankment, measuring around 10–11 km with a height of 1.5 meters, is expected to provide significant protection against floods. To strengthen the structure further, bamboo plantations will be introduced under the VB-G RAM G scheme.
“All departments, including the PWD and Belonia Municipal Council, are working together. Our goal is to ensure that the kind of flood damage witnessed in Belonia in 2024 does not recur,” Sajjad emphasized.
