Agartala, 13th July 2026: Continuous heavy rainfall over the past few days has caused the water level of the Gomati River to rise, leading to severe riverbank erosion in Wards 7 and 8 of Melagarh Municipal Council in Sepahijala district.
The extensive erosion along the riverbank has damaged several houses, with some already washed away into the river. Fearing further destruction, several families living in vulnerable areas have been shifted to safer locations.
On Monday, Sepahijala District Magistrate Dr. Siddharth Shiv Jaiswal visited the affected areas and inspected the erosion sites in Wards 7 and 8 of Melagarh Municipal Council. During his visit, he interacted with the affected families and took stock of their current situation and problems.
Officials from the district administration were also present during the inspection. The District Magistrate assured the affected residents of necessary support and directed concerned authorities to take immediate steps to deal with the situation.
Meanwhile, continuous erosion by the Gomati River has created panic among residents living along the riverbanks. Local people have urged the administration to take permanent measures to prevent erosion, rather than temporary solutions, so that no family loses their last shelter in the future.
