Agartala, 18th January 2025: A violent attack on the Forest Department office in Tripura’s Rabindranagar, Kanchanpur subdivision under North Tripura district on the intervening nights of Friday and Saturday has left the region in shock. Around 70-80 forest robbers stormed the office at night, destroying property and brutally assaulting patrol in-charge Subrata Jamatia.
“The attackers vandalized the office and targeted Jamatia, who tried to resist them,” said Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Suman Molo. The robbers abducted Jamatia, beat him severely, and left him injured on the roadside. He is now receiving treatment at Kanchanpur Sub-Divisional Hospital, where his condition is stable.
This attack highlights the growing threat of forest robbers in Kanchanpur, who have decimated vast areas of greenery over the years. “Our once-lush forests have turned into barren lands due to these robbers,” lamented a local resident. Forest staff face constant threats, working under dangerous conditions.
A case has been filed at Kanchanpur police station for property destruction, attempted murder, and abduction. “We have launched an investigation but are yet to apprehend the culprits,” a police official confirmed.
The incident has created widespread fear among forest staff and residents, prompting urgent calls for enhanced security and stricter action against the perpetrators.
