Agartala, 19th April 2024:   An individual’s attempt to secure bail for an accused under custody backfired, leading to his own arrest at the premises of Khowai court on Friday. The incident took place when a man, presenting himself as a guarantor for the accused, was apprehended by the police on charges of forgery.

The accused, Yadav Shah, a resident of Bihar, has been detained in Khowai Jail under the NDPS section by the Teliamura police station. On Thursday, when Shah’s case was revisited in court, his lawyer filed a bail application. The court approved the bail on the condition that the guarantor must be a regular scale government servant.

The following day, a person named Sajal Das, claiming to be a clerk at Teliamura Sub-Divisional Hospital, approached the court through a lawyer to post bail for Shah. Das presented documents bearing the hospital’s seal. However, upon verification by the officer in charge of the court’s bench, inconsistencies emerged. Das initially identified himself as a clerk from the Ayurvedic Hospital in Agartala, raising suspicions.

The court’s officer promptly contacted both the Ayurvedic Hospital in Agartala and Teliamura Sub-Divisional Hospital, only to find that no employee named Sajal Das was associated with either institution. Furthermore, the Teliamura Hospital authorities confirmed that they had not issued any identity card with the DDO’s signature and seal as presented by Das.

Acting swiftly on the court’s allegation of fraud, the Khowai police station was notified, leading to the immediate arrest of Sajal Das from within the court premises. Currently detained at the police station, Das is under interrogation. Authorities suspect the involvement of a larger syndicate in this fraudulent scheme and are actively investigating to uncover any associated criminal networks.
