Agartala, December 19: A former chairman of the Bankul local committee and a member of the CPI(M) party, Anyakumar Tripura, has been arrested for allegedly raping a disabled girl in Sabroom sub-division of South Tripura district. The incident took place on December 17, when the 61-year-old accused lured the girl to a nearby forest and sexually assaulted her. He also threatened her not to disclose the matter to anyone.

The victim’s mother, who was involved in a dispute with the accused over the girl’s welfare, noticed her deteriorating condition and informed some locals about the incident. They took her to the Bankul Community Health Center on December 18, where the doctor confirmed the rape and informed the media.

The family then lodged a complaint against Anyakumar Tripura at the Sabroom police station, where he was arrested by the officer-in-charge Apu De. A case has been registered against him under sections 341 and 376 of the Indian Penal Code. He will be produced before the Subroom Court today.
