Agartala, 2nd June 2024 : Former Chief Minister and CPIM Politburo member Manik Sarkar on Sunday criticized the current government for neglecting the state’s blood banks, which are facing a severe shortage.

Sarkar emphasized the long-standing commitment of Left-wing organizations to blood donation drives, saying, “Donating blood is a consistent programme organized by Left wings of students, youth, and working-class people for several years.”

Highlighting the gravity of the situation, Sarkar stated, “There is a crisis of blood in the blood banks across the state. People are not getting blood even after doctors prescribe it.” He accused the government of prioritizing publicity over essential healthcare needs, lamenting the decline in organized blood donation camps.

Sarkar called for increased civic engagement to address the shortage. “Organizations like CITU, like students and youth, will have to come forward more and more to give blood. There is no alternative to blood,” he urged.

He praised the auto rickshaw workers union affiliated with CITU for organizing a blood donation camp, underscoring the importance of such initiatives to mitigate the crisis.
