Agartala, 18th September 2025: A four-day-old baby boy born with a severe congenital urinary tract obstruction has been successfully operated on by paediatric surgeon Dr. Aniruddha Basak at Tripura Medical College and Hospital.
The child, born on September 8 to Pinky Pal and Arnab Chandra of Milan Sangha, AD Nagar was diagnosed during pregnancy with balloon-like swelling in both kidneys and a birth defect in the urinary tract. Following delivery, the newborn was referred to Dr. Basak for specialized care.
Upon examination, doctors identified a posterior urethral valve, a condition that blocks urine flow and found one kidney to be non-functional. On September 12, Dr. Basak performed a two-hour emergency surgery to relieve the obstruction and stabilize the infant’s condition.
“The surgery was critical. Without timely intervention, both kidneys could have failed and the child’s life would have been at risk,” Dr. Basak stated.
The baby is now recovering well, with normal urination and bowel movements. Hospital authorities confirmed that he is expected to be discharged on September 22 next.
