Agartala, 3rd September 2026 : In a major administrative development, four police personnel, including the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Bishalgarh Police Station, have reportedly been closed following serious allegations surrounding the disappearance of gold jewellery seized during a police operation earlier this year.
Those reportedly closed are Bishalgarh Police Station OC Bijoy Das, Second OC Supratim De, Sub-Inspector Banijay Reang, and Constable Bahar Mia. A case has also been registered at Bishalgarh Police Station under Case No. 73/2026 in connection with the incident.
The allegations date back to February this year. According to the information available, a family from the Sonamura-Melaghar area was travelling towards Agartala to sell family gold jewellery to meet the medical expenses of an ailing relative. Their vehicle was allegedly stopped by police near Bishalgarh College. During a search, police reportedly recovered more than three kilograms of gold jewellery from the vehicle.
The family has alleged that the vehicle was subsequently taken to a tea garden area and later brought to Bishalgarh Police Station on the instructions of the police. They were reportedly questioned for a considerable period regarding the jewellery kept inside the vehicle. Although the family members were later released, the gold jewellery allegedly could not be found when they received their vehicle back.
The incident subsequently led to serious allegations of misappropriation against the police personnel involved. However, the exact quantity of gold, the circumstances under which it went missing and the veracity of the allegations will be established only through a detailed investigation.
According to reports, the complainants initially approached the local authorities but were allegedly dissatisfied with the action taken. The matter was subsequently taken before the court. The Tripura High Court reportedly directed the registration of an FIR against the Bishalgarh police station OC and two police personnel of SI rank. The court also directed that a competent officer from the Crime Branch be assigned to investigate the matter.
Following the court’s intervention, the investigation was reportedly expanded. CCTV footage from the police station, relevant official documents and the roles of the police personnel connected with the incident are being examined. Senior police officials also reportedly visited the police station and questioned personnel in connection with the case.
In the latest development, the Home Department has reportedly ordered the closure of the Bishalgarh Police Station OC, Second OC, an SI and a constable.
The development has raised serious questions over the conduct of the police personnel involved. The complainant family and the public are now awaiting the outcome of the investigation, which is expected to establish the facts and determine responsibility in the alleged disappearance of the gold jewellery.
