Agartala, 14th April 2026: The annual Charak fair at Mahadebtilla in Khowai, held on the occasion of Chaitra Sankranti, once again drew controversy as gambling dens flourished around the festivities. Locals have long alleged that such fairs across Khowai are routinely accompanied by rampant gambling, often beginning a day ahead of the celebrations.
Last night, acting on a tip-off, police raided a gambling setup at Bhavatosh Para near Sonatala and arrested two men red-handed. Officers recovered six dice, a gambling board, and Rs 770 in cash. The arrested individuals were identified as Tuton Saha (35) and Manoranjan Shil (39), both residents of Bhabatosh Para under Khowai police station.
During the operation, one of the detainees fell ill. In a rare display of compassion, Khowai police personnel, led by Officer-in-Charge Krishnadhan Sarkar, SI Francis Halam, and Subhas Park Outpost OC Ranjit Sarkar, arranged immediate medical care. Later, around 3 a.m., the ailing detainee was safely escorted home.
The incident highlighted two sides of policing: a firm crackdown on illegal gambling and a humane approach to those in custody.
Local residents, however, remain concerned. They allege that unscrupulous groups exploit the fair to promote gambling and substance abuse, particularly in Sonatala and Bhavatosh Para, leading many youths astray.
Police have assured that similar raids will continue across the subdivision to maintain law and order and eliminate such unlawful activities. Authorities have issued a stern warning that illegal gambling and related practices will not be tolerated.
