Agartala, 25th October 2025: A scheduled street rally by the CPIM at Hrishyamukh block was abruptly cancelled today following a dramatic escalation of tensions triggered by protests from Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) karyakartas. The incident took place just hours before the rally was set to begin, prompting a swift response from police personnel and raising concerns over political friction in the region.
According to party sources, the CPIM had planned to hold a public meeting at Motai Bazar in the Hrishyamukh block around noon. Senior leaders including Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury and former MLA Sudhan Das were expected to address the gathering, which was part of the party’s ongoing outreach campaign.
However, before the event could commence, BJP workers and supporters from the local mandal unit staged a sit-in protest on the main road near the venue. Chanting slogans such as “Jitendra Chaudhury Go Back,” the demonstrators demanded accountability from the CPIM leadership over alleged financial irregularities linked to the Rose Valley chit fund scam. Protesters accused Choudhury of failing to return public money and called for transparency regarding his role in the matter.
The protest quickly drew attention from local residents and passersby, creating a tense atmosphere in the area. Locals reported that the crowd swelled rapidly, with verbal confrontations erupting between supporters of both parties. In response to the growing unrest, a large contingent of police personnel was dispatched to the scene to prevent further escalation.
Police officials managed to bring the situation under control, but the CPIM leadership citing safety concerns and the volatile environment decided to cancel the rally. “Given the circumstances and in the interest of public safety, we have called off today’s program,” a party leader said.
The district administration later confirmed that additional police forces had been deployed across Hrishyamukh to maintain law and order. “We are taking all necessary steps to ensure peace and prevent any untoward incidents,” an official said, adding that surveillance in sensitive areas had been intensified.
While CPIM leaders have condemned the disruption as an attack on democratic expression, BJP representatives defended the protest as a legitimate demand for accountability.
