Agartala, 19th October 2024: The Gomati district administration has issued a directive to halt traffic on the bridge on the Kakraban-Udaipur road, effective from Saturday. The closure is in preparation for upcoming commercial activities with Sonamura-Srimantapur, which will see cargo lorries using the Kakraban bridge.
Concerns have been raised about the bridge’s ability to support the weight of large cargo lorries, prompting the need for a thorough test. Vehicular movement on the bridge will remain suspended until the 23rd, with testing set to continue for the next 120 hours. The testing commenced at 11 am on Saturday, with sandbags and police barricades completely sealing both sides of the bridge.
If the bridge passes the tests, no alternative bridge will be constructed. The suspension of traffic has inconvenienced long-distance passengers, who have been advised to use alternate routes to Udaipur, Sonamura, and Melaghar for the next five days, as announced by the district administration.
