Governor Highlights Media’s Role in Strengthening Democracy, felicitates journalists

Agartala, 3rd February 2026:  In a democratic country like India, the role of the media is not limited only to reporting news but also extends to shaping public opinion, ensuring transparency, and establishing accountability in governance, said Tripura Governor Indrasena Reddy Nallu.

The Governor was speaking while inaugurating a felicitation programme for journalists at the Tripura Legislative Assembly today .He said that reporting the proceedings of the Assembly within the framework of law and the Constitution is a sacred responsibility, which demands accuracy, impartiality, and a deep sense of commitment.

Emphasizing the importance of ethical journalism, the Governor said that while the media enjoys constitutionally guaranteed freedom, it must also uphold high moral standards. Verified news, fact-based reporting, and a strong sense of constitutional responsibility are the three pillars of credible journalism, he added.

Calling upon journalists to act as guardians of truth, the Governor warned that fake news and unverified information are not merely professional lapses but can mislead the public and disrupt peace and harmony in society.

The programme was also addressed by Forest Minister Animesh Debbarma, Deputy Speaker of the Tripura Legislative Assembly Ram Prasad Paul, Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury, MLA Rampada Jamatia, and MLA Birajit Sinha, among others. They highlighted the crucial role of the media in strengthening India’s democratic framework.

During the event, the Governor felicitated several eminent journalists of the state. The journalists honoured included Srotoranjan Khisa, Shekhar Dutta, Bijoy Pal, Jayanta Bhattacharjee, Debaraj Dey, Tanmoy Chakraborty, Jayanta Bhowmik, Bhupal Chakraborty, Rahul Chowdhury, Pinaki Das, Shyamal Deb, Dhrubarajan Sen, Pintu Pal, Abhishek Dey, Ranjan Roy, Subrata Debnath, Abhishek Saha, Kinkar Shil, Shekhar Debbarma, and Amit Debbarma.
