GRP and Sidhai Police nab two in major anti-human trafficking operation

Agartala, 4th May 2024:   Two young men were arrested on Friday night by local police in a significant crackdown on human trafficking. The suspects has been identified as Bapan Bhowmik (20) and Gautam Sarkar (30), both residents of Rangamura were allegedly involved in facilitating the illegal entry of Bangladeshi and Rohingya individuals into India.

The arrest was the culmination of a concerted effort by the Government Railway Police (GRP) and Sidhai police station, who had been on high alert since the previous evening. The police official in charge of the operation stated that the duo had been evading capture for an extended period.

On April 30, the GRP police station had detained six Bangladeshi nationals, including those accused of being touts, leading to a formal case being registered. The subsequent police custody and interrogation of these individuals revealed the involvement of Bhowmik and Sarkar in the trafficking network. A raid was promptly organized in the area, but the two suspects managed to flee the scene.

Railway Police officer Tapas Das disclosed that the names of Bhowmik and Sarkar surfaced during the investigation of the April 30 arrests. Despite their initial escape, relentless police vigilance eventually led to their capture. The authorities have initiated legal proceedings against the accused under specific clauses related to human trafficking offenses.
