Agartala, 11th September 2025 : In a remarkable story of resilience and medical support, 37-year-old Uttam Kumar Debbarma of Manu RD Block has successfully defeated leprosy and returned to normal life, thanks to timely diagnosis and dedicated efforts of health workers in Dhalai district.

Debbarma had been suffering for a long time from sores and loss of sensation in different parts of his body. His condition worsened due to lack of proper diagnosis. Finally, on April 15, 2024, doctors at Jamirchhara Health and Wellness Center (HWC-AAM) identified his illness as Multi Bacillary (MB) leprosy.

Without delay, his treatment began on April 17, 2024, at Manu Community Health Centre (CHC). Throughout the long and difficult course of medication, health workers stood by him. Community Health Officer Sushmita Pal, MPWs Ranjit Namasudra and Mishra Debbarma, along with ASHA worker Rabikanya Kallai, consistently monitored his progress, ensured he took his medicines, and gave him the confidence to keep fighting.

After more than a year of disciplined treatment, Uttam Kumar Debbarma was officially declared cured on August 26, 2025. Today, he has rejoined the mainstream of society and has become an inspiration for others battling the disease. Expressing his gratitude, Debbarma thanked the health workers and the district health department for their constant support.“This success is not just of one individual, but also a reflection of the dedication and tireless efforts of the health department staff in Dhalai,” said officials from the office of the Chief Health Officer of Dhalai.
