Agartala, 28th April 2026: Continuous torrential rains and the fury of a nor’wester have thrown Kailashahar, the subdivision headquarters of Unakoti district, into crisis. The swelling waters of the Manu River have inundated several low-lying areas of the town, severely disrupting daily life. Residential homes and shops in Rangauti, Irani Baburbazar, Bhagwan Nagar, and parts of the northern and eastern zones have been flooded, with knee- to waist-deep water making movement nearly impossible. Ward No. 4 of the municipal council has also reported extensive waterlogging.
Adding to the woes, strong winds uprooted electric poles and snapped power lines, plunging large parts of northern Kailashahar into darkness. Frustrated residents staged a road blockade in Tilabazar on Tuesday, demanding restoration of electricity. The protest was later withdrawn following assurances from the administration and the power department.
The storm’s impact has not spared rural areas. Hailstorms damaged tin roofs of numerous houses, leaving nearly a hundred families in distress. Farmers too have been hit hard, as vast stretches of crops were destroyed by the heavy rains and winds.
Vice-Chairperson of Kailashahar Municipal Council, Nitish Dey, along with other public representatives, visited the affected areas to assess the situation. Officials stated that drainage clearance and restoration of electricity are underway. Dey assured residents that while the situation is serious, there is no imminent threat of a flood on the scale of 2018.
Nevertheless, the recurring problem of waterlogging has once again exposed the town’s fragile drainage system. Locals warn that without a permanent solution, future disasters may be unavoidable. Their immediate demands remain clear—swift relief, compensation, and long-term measures to prevent such crises.
