Agartala, 27th July 2024: A housewife reportedly took her own life due to severe family turmoil. The deceased identified as Poonam Majumder (24) was the wife of Rajib Deb, a government employee working in court and a resident of Rabindranagar, Sonamura.
According to Poonam’s family, she was subjected to physical and mental torture by her in-laws including her husband Rajib Deb, who they claim demanded money from her. The abuse, they say, intensified after her marriage, leading to an unbearable situation for Poonam.
On July 26 last, failing to endure the ongoing abuse, Poonam consumed poison at her in-laws’ residence. She was initially taken to sub-divisional hospital and later transferred to GB Hospital in critical condition, where she succumbed to the poisoning during treatment.
Poonam’s mother recounted that her daughter had a two-and-a-half-year-old son, yet the in-laws’ torture did not cease. Following Poonam’s death, her family accused Rajib Deb and his relatives of driving her to suicide. They also alleged that the in-laws did not bring Poonam’s young son to the hospital to see his mother for the last time, nor did they visit Poonam during her hospitalization.
The incident has sparked outrage, with allegations of bride abuse against Rajib Deb’s family causing significant uproar in the community. The authorities are expected to investigate the claims as the case takes place.
