Agartala, 11th April 2025: In a cautionary tale about the perils of greed, Mahamaya Acharya, a housewife from Dakshin Charilam Krishna Sangha has fallen prey to cybercrime losing Rs 22,000 to fraudsters. Despite ongoing government campaigns to raise awareness of cybercrime threats, incidents like this continue to occur.
Mahamaya Acharya, wife of Raju Acharya received a call on Wednesday night from individuals claiming she had won a Google Play lottery worth Rs 5,000. The fraudsters instructed her to complete certain processing steps, including providing a One-Time Password (OTP). Trusting them, she complied, only to find Rs 22,000 stolen from her Ujjivan bank account by Thursday evening.
“I was told I won a lottery and needed to pay for processing. Before I knew it, my account was wiped clean,” Mahamaya Acharya explained emotionally at Bishramganj police station, where she and her husband filed a complaint on Thursday night.
The stolen funds were part of a loan she had recently secured from Vishalgarh Ujjivan Bank for her son’s event, making the financial loss particularly devastating. Police are investigating the matter, while authorities once again stress the importance of vigilance in the face of cybercrime.
“The government urges citizens to remain cautious and avoid trusting unsolicited calls or messages. Verify any claims carefully before sharing sensitive information,” stated a cybercrime expert in light of the incident.
Mahamaya’s experience serves as a grim reminder that cybercriminals often exploit trust and greed, leaving unsuspecting victims in financial ruin. Let this be a lesson for everyone to stay alert and informed.
