Agartala, 22nd August 2024:  The Howrah River has been rising steadily since Tuesday due to heavy rains, reaching a critical danger level by Wednesday afternoon. The flooding has severely impacted the surrounding areas, including the Battala crematorium, which has been submerged since 8 PM on Wednesday.

On Thursday, staff at the Battala Crematorium reported, “We managed to cremate a body at eight o’clock on Wednesday night. However, as the night progressed, river water began to inundate the crematorium.” They further explained that two bodies were discovered during the night, and one was returned on Thursday morning. “We have advised taking the bodies to a crematorium in the Pahar region for cremation,” they added.

The situation has been exacerbated by the submersion of the electric furnace used for cremations. “If the water does not recede, we will be unable to cremate any bodies,” the staff stated.

The rising water levels and subsequent flooding have caused significant disruptions, highlighting the urgent need for effective flood management and infrastructure resilience in the region.
