Agartala, 4th March 2024: A man was arrested on Sunday for allegedly torturing and abetting the suicide of his wife in North Maheshpur village under Jatrapur police station in Tripura’s Gomati district.
The accused, identified as Sanjay Das, had married Poly Rani Banik, a housewife and mother of a three-year-old girl, four years ago in a social ceremony. According to the police, Das used to beat and harass his wife regularly over trivial issues.
On January 29, he assaulted her so brutally that she had to be rescued by her relatives and taken to her father’s house for treatment. She suffered from severe head pain and depression, but could not afford proper medical care. Das also threatened her over phone and demanded money from her family.
Unable to bear the torture, Poly Rani hanged herself from a rope behind her father’s house on Thursday afternoon. Her body was discovered by her family members, who informed the police.
The police registered a case of abetment to suicide against Das based on a complaint filed by Poly Rani’s father, Khagen Banik. After a three-day hunt, the police nabbed Das from his hideout in Dhanpur on Sunday.
The incident has sparked outrage among the local residents, who demanded strict punishment for the accused. They also staged a protest outside the Jatrapur police station, demanding justice for Polirani.
The police said that they are investigating the case and will produce Das before a court soon.
