Husband, In-Laws Arrested Following Death of Woman Who Suffered Burn Injuries

Agartala, 13th May 2026:  A disturbing incident from Bhabanipur under Kathalia Block has triggered widespread concern and tension in the local area after a 23-year-old married woman, Jayita Sarkar, suffered fatal burn injuries.

Following the incident, the victim’s family lodged a written complaint at Jatrapur Police Station, naming her husband Bipod Sarkar (35), mother-in-law Jharna Sarkar (54), and father-in-law Parimal Sarkar. Acting on the complaint, police arrested all three accused from their residence in Bhavanipur on Tuesday.

According to family members, Jayita had allegedly been subjected to ongoing physical and mental abuse since her marriage. Although her husband worked in Chennai, relatives claim he would return home and continue to assault her. The family further stated that prolonged domestic conflict had left her mentally distressed.

On Sunday, the woman reportedly attempted self-immolation at her residence. She was rescued in a critical condition and admitted to GBP Hospital in Agartala for treatment. Despite medical efforts, she succumbed to her injuries at around 9 PM the following day.

The incident has sparked strong reactions in the area, with residents expressing shock over the tragedy. Police have stated that a case has been registered and a detailed investigation is underway. The arrested individuals are being interrogated, and all possible angles are being examined to determine the exact circumstances behind the incident.

Authorities also noted that such cases are rare in the locality, making the incident even more distressing for the community.
