Agartala, January 07: A group of gamblers who were operating an illegal Jhandi-Munda racket under the pretext of Harinam Sankirtan festival in Bandar Choumuhani area of Teliamura police station were exposed and chased away by the locals on Saturday. The police arrived late at the scene and managed to arrest only one person with gambling equipment.
The incident took place around noon when the Harinam Sankirtan festival was going on in the area. The local festival committee and some local leaders were allegedly involved in the gambling racket, which was running without any police intervention. The locals, who were fed up with the illegal activity, confronted the gamblers and asked them to stop. The gamblers refused and started abusing the locals.
The situation turned violent and the locals chased the gamblers away. Some journalists from Teliamura reached the spot to cover the news and tried to capture the gamblers on camera. The gamblers threw away their gambling materials and ran away. The locals informed the sub-divisional police officer about the incident, who came to the area and nabbed one of the gamblers. The rest of them managed to escape.
The locals alleged that the police were in connivance with the gamblers and were allowing them to run the racket under the cover of a lottery. They demanded that the police should take strict action against the gamblers and the festival committee members who were supporting them. They also demanded that the police should patrol the area regularly and prevent such illegal activities from happening again.
