Agartala, January 03: A team of Food and Legal Metrology Department conducted a raid on illegal rice traders in Maharajganj market here on Wednesday, as part of their mission to check the increase in the price of rice in the market. The team found widespread irregularities and sealed a shop that did not have valid rice paper.
According to an official, the team raided several shops in different areas, including Maharajganj market, and checked whether the prices of food items were correct. He said that the team started the campaign to check the price of rice in the market after receiving complaints from consumers.
He also said that the team noticed that there was enough rice stock in the market, but some traders were transporting rice from one place to another by rickshaws to create an artificial scarcity and hike the price.
The team arrested several rickshaw drivers who were carrying rice without valid documents for purchase or sale. The team confiscated the sacks of rice and took them to the office of the Sadar Sub-Divisional Magistrate. The official said that the Sub-Divisional Ruler will take further action against the illegal traders.
