Agartala, 13th August 2024:  In a series of violent incidents linked to the ongoing anti-discrimination movement in Bangladesh, five journalists have tragically lost their lives, and several others have sustained injuries. These attacks have sparked outrage among the journalism community.

In addition to these violent acts, there have been alarming reports of initiatives aimed at banning over fifty journalists, further exacerbating concerns about the suppression of free journalism in Bangladesh.

In a unified response, several journalist organizations from Tripura have come forward to condemn these incidents. The Tripura Journalists Union, Tripura Working Journalists Association, Tripura Electronics Media Society, Khumulwng Press Club, Tripura Digital Media Society, Tripura Web Media Forum, Tripura Journalists Recreation Club, Agartala Sports Journalists Club, and Tripura Sports Journalists Club have issued a joint statement expressing their strong condemnation.

“We strongly condemn these attacks on journalists and the initiatives to ban them. These actions are direct assaults on the freedom of the press. We urge the interim government of Bangladesh to take immediate steps to restore the freedom of journalists, ensuring they can work in a fear-free environment without facing any obstacles,” the statement read.

The organizations have called on the interim government to take appropriate measures to safeguard journalists’ rights and freedoms, emphasizing the need for a secure and supportive environment for media professionals.

In a show of solidarity, all journalists in the state of Tripura are requested to wear black badges tomorrow in memory of the journalists who were killed in Bangladesh. This act of remembrance aims to honor their sacrifice and draw attention to the urgent need for action to protect journalists worldwide.
