Agartala, August 21, 2023: A shocking incident of violence and humiliation against a woman and her minor son has come to light in Tripura, where they were stripped and beaten by a mob for allegedly stealing money from a shop. The incident took place on Sunday night in Shanmura area in the suburbs of Agartala city, where a local member Shuklal Das had summoned the woman and her son to a kangaroo court after they were accused of theft.

According to the woman, her son and two other minors had stolen money from a shop to buy alcohol. The locals had caught the three minors and released two of them, but asked the woman and her son to appear before the court. The woman said that she had agreed to return the stolen money, but the mob, which was intoxicated, attacked her son and shaved his head. When she protested, they stripped her and chased her with sticks. She also said that they tried to kill her and her son.

The police arrived at the scene after getting information from the locals and rescued the woman and her son. They were taken to GB Hospital for treatment. The woman said that she did not know if the police had registered any case or made any arrests after the incident.

The incident has drawn widespread condemnation from various women’s organizations and civil society groups, who have compared it to the case of two women being stripped and paraded on the streets in Manipur, which is currently being investigated by the CBI. They have demanded strict action against the perpetrators and justice for the victims. They have also said that stealing by a minor should not be a reason to violate the dignity of a woman and that such incidents tarnish the image of Tripura.
