Agartala, 17th July 2026 :A six-month-old baby has died at IGM Hospital, with the family alleging negligence and lack of proper treatment by the doctors on duty. The deceased child, identified as Joydeep Das, was a resident of the R.K. Nagar Banikya Chaumuhani area. His father, Nityananda Das, has accused the hospital authorities and the attending doctors of failing to provide timely medical care.
According to the family, the child had been suffering from illness since July 11 and was taken to IGM Hospital due to severe breathing difficulties. The doctor on duty allegedly told the family that there was nothing serious and prescribed medicines before sending them home.
As the child’s condition did not improve, the family brought him back to IGM Hospital on Monday. However, they alleged that the doctor from the paediatric department did not admit the child and instead advised them to buy a thermometer and gave medicines for fever before sending them home again.
Concerned over the deteriorating health condition of the baby, the family took him to a private doctor. However, there was no significant improvement. The following day, Tuesday, the parents again brought Joydeep to IGM Hospital, where doctors reportedly admitted him and started nebulisation treatment due to severe breathing problems.
The family claimed that despite treatment, the child’s condition continued to worsen. He stopped eating, drinking, and passing urine and stool. When the family informed the doctors, they were allegedly prescribed saline and medicines. The relatives further claimed that the child’s body gradually turned dark before he died on Thursday night.
The grieving family has alleged that their child’s death occurred due to improper treatment and demanded a fair investigation into the incident. They have called for strict action against the doctors and health workers responsible, if found guilty.
The incident has raised fresh questions over healthcare services at government hospitals in the state. While the state government has repeatedly claimed that hospitals are equipped with necessary medical facilities, allegations of negligence continue to surface.
The family has demanded an immediate inquiry into the matter. Similar allegations of deaths due to alleged medical negligence have been reported from IGM Hospital in the past as well, with families claiming that previous investigations failed to reach a conclusion.
Whether authorities will initiate a detailed probe into the death of the infant remains to be seen.
