Agartala, 17th July 2026 :Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury has urged Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Dhankar to initiate an inquiry into the alleged security lapses during a CPI(M) programme held at Chottakhola in Belonia on July 15. In his letter, Chaudhury sought action against the Superintendent of Police (SP) of South Tripura, accusing him of failing to ensure adequate security for the event.
The programme was organised by the CPI(M) to observe the second martyrdom anniversary of party leader Badal Shil. According to Chaudhury, the party had secured prior permission from the police and had also requested additional security during meetings with the District Magistrate and the SP on July 13. He further stated that he had spoken to the DGP a day before the programme and was assured that necessary security arrangements would be put in place.
Despite these assurances, Chaudhury alleged that a group of BJP supporters and other anti-social elements assembled near the venue on the morning of the programme and intimidated residents to discourage them from attending. He claimed that repeated requests made by CPI(M) leaders for police intervention did not result in any preventive action.
The Opposition leader further alleged that three vehicles carrying CPI(M) supporters were attacked and vandalised as they approached the venue, leaving five to six supporters injured. He also claimed that his attempts to contact the South Tripura SP during the incident went unanswered.
Chaudhury alleged that police personnel repeatedly stopped his convoy while he was travelling to Chottakhola, delaying his arrival by more than an hour. He further claimed that near Chottakhola market, the Additional SP, accompanied by a Deputy Collector and a large police force, prevented him from reaching the programme venue.
In his letter, Chaudhury accused the district police of failing to maintain law and order and alleged that instead of acting against those responsible for the disruption, they obstructed the CPI(M) from conducting a programme that had received prior permission. Holding the South Tripura SP accountable for the alleged lapses, he called for a fair inquiry and appropriate departmental action.
The police are yet to issue an official response to the allegations raised by the Leader of the Opposition.
