Elderly Father-in-Law Accused of Raping Daughter-in-Law, Son Commits Suicide Over Humiliation

Date:

Agartala, 17th July 2026 : In a deeply tragic and reprehensible incident reported from the Jatanbari Bazar Tilla area under Natun Bazar Police Station in Gomati district, a 75-year-old man has been accused of raping his daughter-in-law.

The revelation of the alleged crime drove the accused’s son, Pradeep Das, to commit suicide by hanging himself, unable to bear the severe mental trauma and social disgrace, according to local sources.

The incident has sparked intense outrage across the locality. Enraged local residents caught hold of the accused, identified as Sukumar Das, and subjected him to public humiliation—garlanding him with shoes, smearing black ink on his face, and parading him through the market.

He was later tied to a pole, beaten, and pelted with rotten eggs by the mob as a mark of protest. As the situation turned volatile, police from Natun Bazar station arrived at the spot, rescued the accused from the crowd, and took him into custody at the police station.

Locals have alleged that the victim, a homemaker, was a simple and gentle-natured woman. They further claimed that she had been enduring prolonged physical and mental torture at the hands of her in-laws.

According to reports, the matter came to light a few days ago when a female neighbor reportedly witnessed the elderly father-in-law engaging in alleged immoral conduct with the woman inside her home. Since then, the issue had become a topic of heated discussion in the area.

The community has unanimously demanded that if proven guilty, the accused must face swift and exemplary legal action so that such heinous crimes are deterred in the future.

This tragic incident is not just an individual family’s ordeal but a stark reflection of the moral decay within society. Police have initiated a thorough investigation into the matter.
