Tribal Customary Law Coordination Committee Calls for Mass Sit-in on December 7

Date:

Agartala, 1st November 2026 : The Tripura Tribal Customary Law Coordination Committee has called for a mass sit-in on December 7, demanding the speedy codification of customary laws of various tribal communities in Tripura.

The decision was taken at a meeting of traditional tribal community leaders held at the Agartala Press Club on Sunday.

Addressing a press conference after the meeting, joint convenor Birendra Tripura said that 14 customary law bills had been unanimously passed at a session of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) on December 28, 2022, but the bills have yet to be fully enacted into law.

He alleged that despite repeated demands to the state government and the ADC administration, no effective steps had been taken to complete the codification process.

As a mark of protest, the committee will stage a three-hour mass sit-in from 12 noon on December 7 at the foot of the Gandhi statue near Circuit House in Agartala.

The committee warned that if the authorities fail to take concrete steps to fulfil its demands even after the protest, it will call for a statewide strike in Tripura.

The committee reiterated its demand for the early enactment of the customary laws, which it considers important for safeguarding the traditional practices and customary rights of the state’s tribal communities.
