Intellectuals appeal for peace ahead of counting

Agartala: February 22. Expressing concern on the recently held sporadic post-poll violence across the state the intellectuals and civil society members of Agartala have appealed Election Commission, Police Administration and political parties Leaders to build a beautiful state free of violence and appeal to ensure the safety of the common people.

In a joint statement to Chief Secretary JK Sinha, CEO Kiran Gitte and DGP Amitabha Ranjan said that the happy society of this state, scholars, poets, writers, journalists, artists and other intellectual circles are deeply disturbed by the incidents of violence, vandalism and arson in various parts of the state for the past few days.

“We are deeply concerned about these incidents. Therefore, we would like to appeal to all the intelligent people of this state to unite and protest against any kind of violence. It is humbly requested to all concerned parties to instruct their respective party workers not to indulge in any violent incidents”, the letter reads.

It further reads that Election Commission, Police Administration including general administration and political parties Leaders of various parties to collectively take a pledge to build a beautiful state free of violence and appeal to all to ensure the safety of the common people in their respective areas and all the organizations that maintain law and order.

“It should be ensured that post-poll violence does not happen under any circumstances by maintaining peace and order in the state. Our appeal to the citizens is that we can build a beautiful society collectively and in the state”, it reads.

The joint appeal was done by A B Pal (Retired Justice), Dr. Bikash Roy, Subal Kumar Dey (Editor, Syandan Patrika), Samiran Roy (Editor, Tripura Darpan), Shekhar Dutta (Veteran Journalist), Arun Nath (Veteran Journalist & Editor of Tripura Observer), Krishnadhan Nath (Writer), Sanit Debroy (Editor); Biswendu Bhattacharya (Journalist), Samir Dhar (Veteran Journalist), Jayanta Debnath (Editor, Tripura Info.com) and many others at Agartala Press Club.
