Agartala, 26th June 2025: The much-anticipated Jan Aushadhi Kendra at Unakoti District Hospital continues to remain non-functional despite the government’s initiative to provide affordable generic medicines to the public.
The tender for operating the center was awarded to businessman Nurul Amin Khadim on March 27, with a mandated opening date set for June 27. However, a day ahead of the deadline, the center remains unopened, sparking concerns and accusations from the local community.
Sources within the hospital allege that Khadim has failed to submit essential documents required to initiate operations. Compounding public suspicion, Khadim reportedly owns a pharmacy directly opposite the hospital—a detail that has fueled speculation about a deliberate delay driven by personal business interests.
Medical Superintendent Dr. Rohan Pal confirmed that if the Jan Aushadhi Kendra does not commence by June 27, a show cause notice will be issued on June 28. “We will take action as per DHS instructions,” he stated, adding that the administration’s response on June 28 will reveal the seriousness of their commitment to serving economically disadvantaged patients.
The delay has raised questions about the efficacy of government interventions in ensuring access to affordable healthcare for all.
