Agartala, 26th June 2025: Michael Madhusudan Dutta College(MMDC), Sabroom in association with Sabroom Sub-Divisional Hospital celebrated International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking today. The theme for this year 2025 is “The Evidence is Clear: Invest in Prevention”. It highlights the need for urgent, evidence-based preventative measures to address the world’s drug problem and educate the young generations about these issues.
The event was attended by Dr. Soumik Hazra, Medical Officer, SOST Center, MDH, Sabroom South Tripura, who elaborated on the significance of observing the International day against Drug Abuse and Trafficking. Dr. Arup Patari, NSS Program Officer, along with other professors and students were present in the programme.
Dr. Hazra stated that: Every year, on June 26th, we observe the World Drug Prevention Day. In 1987, the United Nations proposed a resolution to make the society drug-free, which was unanimously adopted. June 26th was designated as the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. He further explained that the ‘three-pronged approach of the ‘Nasha Mukt Bharat’ (Drug-Free India) initiative involves control of drug supply by the Bureau of Narcotics Control, awareness and advocacy campaigns, social justice and empowerment efforts, and coordination with the health sector for treatment.
He highlighted the harmful effects of drug use on health, society, and the economy, urging people to become aware of these impacts. The use of drugs can lead to serious diseases like cancer, heart disease, respiratory issues, and more. It is crucial to protect the younger generation from drugs and encourage a drug-free life. Dr. Hazra also pointed out that drug use and trafficking negatively affect mental health and can harm pregnant women and their babies. Human resources are the most valuable asset of the world; therefore, health awareness is extremely important. He advised everyone to take advantage of government healthcare facilities.
Dr. Patari appealed to all present to come forward to eliminate drug use and trafficking. At the end of the program, students participated anti-drug rallies and distributed awareness posters. The college assured that similar initiatives would be carried out on a larger scale in the future.
