Agartala, 17th August 2025: For the first time in decades, the national flag was not hoisted at Gandhi Ghat on Independence Day, breaking a long-standing tradition and triggering a wave of political controversy across Tripura.
Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury condemned the incident, calling it a “deeply unfortunate and unwarranted lapse.”
Speaking to media personnel here, Chaudhury said, “There was no official decision to skip the flag hoisting. It’s a serious oversight and the responsibility lies squarely with the state government.”
He further accused the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of neglecting national values in favor of ideological figures.
“The BJP is busy glorifying leaders like Shyama Prasad Mukherjee and Savarkar, individuals who once opposed India’s independence and collaborated with the British. In their obsession with those who tried to sabotage the freedom movement, they forgot to honor the very symbol of that freedom at Gandhi Ghat,” Chaudhury alleged.
