Agartala, 22nd March 2024 :  CPIM State Secretary Jitendra Chaudhury has raised serious allegations against BJP MLA Abhishek Debroy. On Friday, Chaudhury penned a detailed letter to the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), urging immediate action against Debroy for purportedly misusing his position to influence the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

The letter highlighted a circular issued by Debroy, who also serves as the President of the BJP Gomati District Committee. The document, addressed to ‘Mandal Prabhari/Mandal Presidents’, contained directives to secure a minimum lead of 25,000 votes for the BJP candidate in each assembly segment. Chaudhury questioned the feasibility of such a lead without resorting to “systematic manipulation and massive rigging.”

Chaudhury’s letter further scrutinized the circular’s fourth paragraph, where Debroy allegedly instructed his followers to facilitate the defection of selected opposition leaders to the BJP. This move, according to Chaudhury, sends a covert message to either coerce or entice opposition figures into the BJP fold, a tactic observed at the national level.

Moreover, the CPIM State Secretary took issue with the seventh paragraph of the circular, where Debroy reportedly called on his followers to contact government beneficiaries and prompt them to give a missed call to a Gujarat-based mobile number. Chaudhury argued that such beneficiaries are not obligated to support the ruling party and expressed concerns over potential coercion.

Chaudhury’s accusations suggest a tense electoral atmosphere in Tripura, with implications of unfair practices. He has appealed to the CEC for decisive action against Debroy and for measures to ensure a free, fair, and peaceful election process. The CEC’s response to these allegations could have far-reaching consequences for the integrity of the Lok Sabha polls in the state.
