Agartala, 3rd March 2025:   The 51st Martyrdom Day of Kokborok language movement Dhananjay Tripura was observed on Monday. The event was marked by tributes from Narayan Kar, the convenor of the Left Front, and other leaders at the CPM state office in Agartala. Additionally, CPIM state secretary and opposition leader Jitendra Chaudhury paid homage to the late leader’s portrait at Dhananjay Park, Jolaibari.

Speaking to reporters, Chaudhury said, “On March 3, 1975, Dhananjay Tripura was killed by police firing at Jolai Bari while marching with four demands, including the recognition of Kokborok as a state language. The Left Front government, which came to power in 1978, granted state language status to Kokborok on January 19, 1979. Since then, Ganamukti Parishad and CPM have been observing Martyrdom Day in honor of Dhananjay Tripura. This year, as in previous years, we paid tribute to his portrait at Dhananjay Park.”

Narayan Kar, the convenor of the Left Front, said, “Fifty years ago, Dhananjay Tripura was killed by police firing during the Congress regime while demanding the recognition of Kokborok as a state language along with three other demands. The movement also saw injuries among the tribal community. Currently, BJP and Tipra Motha are trying to create divisions among the tribal and non-tribal communities. They are attempting to spread hatred under the guise of Thansa. Meanwhile, the central and state governments are influencing the tribal population,” he alleged.
