Justice or intimidation! Chittaranjan Club area residents face threats in fight for safety

Agartala, 15th October 2024: In a disturbing incident during a carnival in Chittaranjan on Monday night, parents and children found themselves embroiled in a violent confrontation, raising questions about the safety and governance in the area. Four children were injured after bouncers from the Chittaranjan Club aggressively pushed them aside while transporting an idol near the Rajdhani Post Office Chowmuhani.

The situation escalated when parents intervened, leading to an attack by the bouncers on both children and women. In response, the parents lodged a complaint with the police and staged a protest by blocking the road, demanding the arrest of those responsible. Tensions rose further when two men, identified as Dwip and Vicky, approached the blockade and issued death threats to the guardians, insisting they lift the protest immediately.

The protest continued until police intervened, assuring the parents that action would be taken. Following the assurance, they ended the blockade, but not before one of the bouncers was arrested a few hours later. Subsequently, parents filed a case at the West Agartala police station.

The situation took a dangerous turn when notorious local mafia figures, including Kanai Saha, Arjun, Vijay, Vishnu, and Tanuj, allegedly threatened a litigant’s family the following afternoon. Reports indicate that Booth President Kingkar Saha, associated with the ruling party in Baradwali Assembly Constituency, became a target as Saha’s group reportedly vandalized Kingkar’s hotel.

The intimidation escalated when they attacked Kingkar’s residence with various weapons, leading Kanai Saha to brandish a pistol and threaten to kill him. In the aftermath, Kingkar Saha and his family sought refuge at the West Agartala police station, where they filed another complaint.

Saha called for a fair investigation, appealing to the Chief Minister and emphasizing that such incidents reflect poorly on governance, suggesting that mafia influence could tarnish even the assembly seat’s integrity. The question remains: how can the stigma of poor governance be eradicated? Notably, it was reported that the Chief Minister, when approached for assistance, did not turn a blind eye to the ongoing situation.
