Kasba Border Haat stays shut as Bangladesh delays action

Agartala, 24th December 2023:    Despite the reopening of all border haats that were closed in the aftermath of the Covid-19 outbreak, the border haat in Kasba remains shut due to inaction from the Bangladesh side.

Currently, there are two existing Border Haats at Kamalasagar and Srinagar. Additionally, plans are in place to establish two more Border Haats at Raghna (North Tripura) and Kamalpur (Dhalai). A new Border Haat is also proposed for Kathalia (Nirbhaypur) in Sipahijala, and site selection is underway for another at Khowai.

While the Srinagar border haat reopened last month, residents of Sepahijala district are eagerly awaiting the reopening of the border haat in Kamalasagar.

An official from Sepahijala district revealed that the Tripura Government has been in constant communication with its Bangladeshi counterpart regarding the reopening of the border haat.

“Since the Covid outbreak, the border haat at Kamalasagar was closed. Parts of its construction were completely destroyed, and some were partially damaged. We held joint meetings and inspections with the state government and the Bangladesh government. They raised concerns about issues such as clearing bushes, reconstructing buildings and sheds, and cleaning. We accepted their proposals and addressed the issues. However, despite sending numerous emails to restart the border haats, we have not received any consent from their end,” stated the official.

The official further emphasized that due to Bangladesh’s inaction, traders on the Indian side are incurring significant losses. The state government has repeatedly urged the Bangladesh government to expedite the reopening of the border haat to alleviate the hardships faced by traders.
