Agartala, 30th July 2024:  One of Agartala’s oldest and most bustling markets, Lake Chowmuhani Bazar is grappling with severe disorder and unsanitary conditions leading to a deteriorating experience for shoppers and vendors alike. The market, which sees heavy footfall every morning, is reportedly collapsing under the weight of pollution and mismanagement.

In a bid to address these pressing issues, Agartala Municipal Corporation Mayor Dipak Majumder along with Commissioner Shailesh Kumar Yadav, local councilors and other officials visited the market on Tuesday. The visit aimed to devise strategies to restore order and cleanliness to the historic marketplace.

Speaking to the media after the visit, Mayor Majumder expressed his dismay at the current state of the market. “It is disheartening to see the condition of Lake Chowmuhani Bazaar. We have received numerous complaints from both buyers and sellers about the unsanitary conditions and the disorder caused by some unscrupulous businessmen who are not adhering to government regulations,” he said.

The Mayor emphasized that immediate measures would be taken to ensure all markets in Agartala are user-friendly. “We cannot allow this anarchy to continue. Similar issues have been resolved in Battala and Maharajganj markets, and we will do the same here,” he asserted.

One of the major concerns highlighted was the illegal construction of houses within the market premises, which poses a significant risk during emergencies. “In case of a fire or any other incident, it is crucial that fire engines and ambulances can access the market without obstruction. We will issue notices to demolish these illegal structures within three days. If not complied with, the demolition will be carried out within seven days,” Mayor Majumder warned.

Additionally, the Mayor announced plans to install dustbins throughout the market to prevent traders from disposing of garbage indiscriminately. “We are committed to maintaining cleanliness and order. No unfair practices will be tolerated,” he stated firmly.

The Mayor also addressed the issue of vendors occupying the sides of the market, which poses a danger to public safety. “The corporation authorities will take strict action against those who are encroaching on public spaces. We cannot risk people’s lives,” he concluded.

The visit and subsequent announcements have brought a glimmer of hope to the residents and traders of Lake Chowmuhani Bazaar, who are eagerly awaiting the promised improvements.
