Land dispute escalates at Durgapur: Complainant appeals for resolution

Agartala, 5th June 2025 :   A long-standing land conflict has resurfaced in the Durgapur Gram Panchayat area under Sonamura Police Station, as a dispute over ancestral property takes a legal turn. The controversy revolves around a 23-acre plot acquired by the Public Works Department in 1952 for the construction of a dam on the Gomati River. Despite the acquisition, the complainant Shafiqur Rahman claims that his family continued cultivating the land under traditional practices.

According to Rahman, tensions arose in 2023 when his cousin, Md. Shamsul Alam, allegedly began asserting ownership over the property, undertaking permanent constructions despite administrative directives. Rahman argues that all family members have equal rights over their ancestral land and contests Alam’s claim of having purchased the property with legal documents.

After exhausting administrative channels including appeals to the Sub-Divisional Magistrate, District Magistrate, Chief Minister, Governor, and the Prime Minister’s Office Rahman secured an official order in February, under the supervision of the Sonamura Sub-Divisional Magistrate, mandating Alam to vacate the premises within a month. However, three months later, the directive remains unfulfilled.

In response to inquiries, Rahman alleges that Alam has resorted to intimidation tactics, including an attack on Rahman’s family, leading to a formal police complaint at Sonamura Police Station. Frustrated by the lack of action, Rahman has turned to the media, expressing concerns that the continued disregard for the order suggests deeper underlying issues.

Rahman, a retired state government employee, has urged authorities to intervene promptly, hoping for a resolution to the dispute that has disrupted his family’s peace.
