Agartala, 4th June 2025: The much-anticipated construction of the new Ambassa sub-divisional magistrate’s (SDM) office remains stalled due to ongoing land disputes, raising concerns over government accountability and local encroachments.
Officials had planned to begin work last year, relocating 14 poor families to facilitate the project. However, despite repeated official notices, legal hurdles and alleged encroachments by local influential figures have prevented progress.
One of the key legal barriers comes from Tapesh Debnath, a resident of Dolubari Bazar, who has filed a case against the government regarding ownership rights. “I have valid claims over the land, and I will fight for justice,” he stated.
Meanwhile, a portion of Shukendu Deb’s building stands on private land, but no corrective action has been taken despite multiple administrative warnings. Additionally, another businessman Bimal Deb Roy is reported to have constructed a large structure on government property. Recent developments indicate he may cede adjacent land in exchange for retaining his disputed holdings, sparking questions over transparency.
Local residents and members of the Dolubari Bazar Committee have voiced concerns over the administration’s decision-making. “Why is the subdivision administration prioritizing road construction using private land instead of finding a legal resolution?” asked a committee representative.
